Product Description
Each player card measures 3.5″ x 5.5″. The front has a portrait painted by Graig Kreindler, “Painter of the National Pastime” and the 2018 Sports Artist of the year as named by the American Sports Art Museum and Archive. The reverse of the card has a brief “back story” about the player’s life and/or an event in civil rights he may have dealt with. In addition to the 32 player cards, there is a Title Card with a brief history of the Negro Leagues and a Checklist Card. This set is offered as a recognition of these under-appreciated players who played in the shadows of a segregated society. African-Americans largely played on barnstorming teams between 1895 – 1919. In 1920, Rube Foster founded the first successful Negro League, the Negro National League, to bring organizational structure to black baseball. Foster hoped a league featuring quality black baseball players playing in an profitable, organized structure would one day lead to integration of MLB. While Foster did not live to see his dream come true, seven Negro Leagues rose and fell between 1920 and 1960 showcasing the best of black baseball players. These players gained the respect of their professional white contemporaries eventually leading to integration in 1947 when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.
